Via the Ventura County Young Republicans;
Sam Blakeslee was sworn into the California State Senate Monday. Blakeslee succeeds Abel Maldonado in the 15th district, preventing the Democrats from getting a two-thirds majority.
The race was close in the Central Coast–neither candidate received 50 percent in June, forcing a runoff that was decided last week.
Members of the Ventura County Young Republican Board of Directors drove up to San Luis Obispo during both the primary and runoff elections.
“I am deeply appreciative of the confidence placed in me by the people of the 15th Senate District,” Blakeslee said in a statement. ”I will work hard to represent everyone on the Central Coast as we fight to bring jobs and fiscal responsibility back to California.”
At Blakeslee’s actual swearing in, everything looked like roses between the new California Senator and the Democrat leader, Darrel Steinberg;
Sam Blakeslee, R-San Luis Obispo, takes the oath Monday as the state’s newest senator, with his wife, Kara, and 7-year-old daughter Landis by his side. Blakeslee was sworn in by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, the Sacramento Democrat who had mustered forces to defeat Blakeslee and grab the Central Coast seat from the GOP during the bruising and expensive Aug. 17 special election to replace Abel Maldonado, the 15th District senator who was named lieutenant governor this year. There were no hard feelings, though, as Blakeslee and Steinberg embraced and senators from both parties extended congratulations. “Sam’s a good guy,” Steinberg said.
Steinberg is sounding all warm and fuzzy, but Sam has said already that new taxes are “…off the table.” according to the Fresno Bee article linked above, and Darrell Steinberg is all about Tax and Spend.
